It is 270 miles on the I-15. Everyone assumes flying is faster. Door to door, for more than two people, it usually is not.
The flight is not an hour
An hour in the air. Plus getting to LAX, plus two hours before departure, plus baggage, plus the taxi at the other end. Call it five hours and a lot of standing.
The drive is four
Four to four and a half with one stop, depending on traffic out of the basin. You leave from your door and arrive at your hotel entrance. Your luggage never leaves the car.
When to go
Leaving LA on a Friday afternoon is the worst version of this trip — the I-15 through the Cajon Pass backs up badly. Early morning Friday or any time Thursday is a different road entirely. Coming back Sunday afternoon has the same problem in reverse; Sunday evening or Monday morning is calmer.
What it costs
A fixed price agreed before you leave, with no surge and no per-bag charge. For four to six people it compares well with four flights; for a group in the van it is not close.
